The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) is a comprehensive database maintained by the U.S. Department of Education containing information about federal student loans and grants. This file is used to track and manage federal student aid data, including details like the following:
Loan Information: Details about your federal student loans/grants, including balances, repayment statuses, and loan servicer contact information.
Repayments: By understanding the details in your NSLDS file, SDS can properly analyze your loan repayments and default statuses, if applicable.
Loan History: The historical record of federal student aid you have received, which can be useful for financial planning and loan consolidation.
Every borrower who takes out a loan from the Department of Education can set up and access an account on the Federal Student Aid website. This is not a website or app for any specific servicer. In your FSA account there is information about all federal loans linked to you and this is where the NSLDS text (.txt) file is located.
This file is extremely valuable for determining federal repayment options in SDS because it provides all the precise, authoritative details needed to calculate eligibility and payments under different federal programs. For example, knowing loan types and disbursement dates is essential to determine which income-driven repayment plans are available; interest rates and outstanding balances help estimate monthly payments; and servicer information ensures communication with the correct entities during the implementation process. By importing this file into the SDS program, SDS can generate a borrower’s repayment scenarios without manual data entry or guesswork.
