Results are in: Our Most Asked Questions About Student Debt Solutions

Managing student loans can be confusing — but it doesn’t have to be. At Student Debt Solutions (SDS), we help borrowers take the guesswork out of repayment, forgiveness, and financial planning. Our support team answers thousands of questions every month, and we’ve rounded up the ones we hear most often, along with quick answers to help you make the most of your SDS experience.

What Does SDS Do?

Student Debt Solutions is an online platform that simplifies the complexity of student loans. We analyze your entire loan scenario, including federal and private loans, to create personalized repayment strategies based on your goals, income, and loan eligibility.

Within 15 minutes, SDS gives you a clear view of your repayment options, forgiveness paths, and consolidation opportunities. It’s FREE to complete the analysis and see your options. You will then be able to opt in to leverage SDS features, tools, services, and/or resources to help you make your plan a reality!

How Does SDS Work?

Once you log in, the process is quick and intuitive:

  1. Create your account and enter your income information.

  2. Upload your student loan data, including your NSLDS file (for federal loans).

  3. Answer a few questions, including info about you to determine your current eligibility for cancellation, forgiveness, etc.

  4. Review your options in an easy-to-read format with clear comparisons.

Your results include monthly and total repayment plan estimates, considering forgiveness, cancellation, and even strategies for getting out of default.

Once your free analysis is complete, you can opt for additional assistance with your plan and leverage other features and services like document preparation or scheduling a one-on-one consultation with a certified student loan expert for extra guidance.

REMEMBER: If you have issues entering your information and want to connect with a counselor immediately, use the “Need Help?” widget on the left side of the screen and you can schedule right away!

How Do I Get My NSLDS File?

Your NSLDS file (also called “My Student Data”) contains the official details of your federal student loans. It’s what SDS uses to analyze your situation accurately.

Here’s how to get it:

  1. Go to studentaid.gov.

  2. Log in with your FSA ID, email, or phone number.

  3. Complete two-step verification.

  4. On the “My Aid” page, click “View Details.”

  5. Then click “Download My Aid Data.”

The file will download as MyStudentData.txt — that’s the one to upload into SDS when prompted. You can also use our chat or reach out by phone to ask our support team for assistance with finding and accessing your file!
